Kwanalu Young Farmer of the Year – search for our 2019 winner in on!
Every year we are afforded the opportunity to showcase the caliber of farmers in our province with the annual Kwanalu Young Farmer of the Year competition. The winner then goes on to represent all KZN farmers and Kwanalu in the Toyota/ Agri SA National Young Farmer of the Year and stands the chance to drive away in a Toyota Hilux Single Cab!
Our past four Kwanalu Young Farmer of the Year winners are Tongaat farmer, Anthony Goble (2015), who went on to win the national title, Vryheid farmer Neville Schefermann (2016), Richmond farmer Ross Lowe (2017) and Groenvlei farmer Rustin Shawe (2018). All four farmers have reported immense value in winning the title for their farming enterprises and encourage others to do so.
Competition criteria
Farmers, under the age of 40, whether they are owners, partners or manages in/on a farm, male or female and are full members of their provinces agricultural union are eligible for entry. The judging and evaluation of the farmers and their agricultural practices, takes place in August with the applicants being evaluated on all aspects of their business including their overall vision for the future of the farm/ business. Although the size of the farmer’s enterprise is taken into account, judging is based on excellence with regards to how the young farmer executes his day to day business practices – no matter how big or small his/ her farm.
Sandy La Marque has called on all farmers and farm managers under 40 years of age to enter and to do KZN proud.
“We encourage all of our eligible members under 40 years old to enter this competition recognising the great skill and entrepreneurial spirit we have here in KZN”, said Sandy.
