Drastic times call for drastic measures in South Africa

23 March 2020

Agri SA welcomes the drastic measures President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced to the nation regarding the mitigation activities related to COVID-19 and the spread of the disease in South Africa. As of today, there are 402 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Africa and the virus is spreading rapidly.

“We have to flatten the curve to stop a large-scale catastrophe in South Africa,” says Omri van Zyl, Agri SA’s executive director. The 21-day lockdown will have a massive impact on the economy, but it remains imperative that essential services remain intact.

Agriculture is one of these and the production of food and food supplies must ensure that we keep our food security status intact and that we nourish our people. “The farmers of South Africa will support our people and our country in these times of need and turbulence” mentions Pierre Vercueil, Agri SA’s president.
