On 6 March 2025, Wesgro, the Fresh Produce Exporters Forum (FPEF), and AgriSA will convene industry leaders and stakeholders for a pivotal event titled “2025 Agricultural Trade and Investment: Charting the Way Forward.” This event will take place against the backdrop of increasing global geopolitical tensions, where the resilience and growth of South Africa’s agricultural sector exists as a beacon of economic strength.

Over the past year, the South African agriculture sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience amidst challenges such as a mid-summer drought affecting grain and oilseed production. In 2024, agricultural exports increased by 3% to reach a record high of US$13.7 billion—driven by strong fruit harvests and livestock recovery. Since 2020, the agricultural trade balance has doubled from $3 billion to an impressive $6 billion, further reinforcing the sector’s pivotal role in the country’s international trade efforts.

“South Africa has world class export driven farmers. Over the past 20 years, fruits and wine have come to dominate the commodity export basket accounting for 33% of total exports value in 2023. These commodities are also labour intensive, underscoring their importance for employment opportunities in agriculture,” says Anton Kruger, Chief Executive Office of FPEF.

With the South African G20 presidency on the horizon, discussions at this event will focus on the critical challenges and opportunities for enhanced market access for South African agricultural products and investment. “We recognize the vital role that agriculture plays in not just our economy, but also in regional food security,” says Johann Kotze, AgriSA Chief Executive Officer. “As we move forward, embracing sustainability and enhancing market access is fundamental to our long-term success and resilience.”

The event will provide a platform for dialogue on various strategies to overcome tariff and non-tariff barriers and improving cooperation among industry players. A report will be released on the key trade challenges and opportunities that South African agriculture faces.

More than 50% of South African produce is exported through the Western Cape, which highlights the province’s reputation as a regional hub for agricultural trade and investment opportunities,” added Wrenelle Stander, WESGRO Chief Executive Officer.

Op 6 Maart 2025 sal Wesgro, die Varsprodukte-uitvoerdersforum (FPEF) en AgriSA bedryfsleiers en belanghebbendes byeenroep vir ‘n deurslaggewende geleentheid getiteld “2025 Landbouhandel en Belegging: Die Weg Vorentoe karteer.” Hierdie geleentheid sal plaasvind teen die agtergrond van toenemende globale geopolitieke spanning, waar die veerkragtigheid en groei van Suid-Afrika se landbousektor as ‘n baken van ekonomiese krag bestaan.

Die afgelope jaar het die Suid-Afrikaanse landbousektor merkwaardige veerkragtigheid getoon te midde van uitdagings soos ‘n midsomerdroogte wat graan- en oliesadeproduksie beïnvloed. In 2024 het landbou-uitvoer met 3% toegeneem om ‘n rekordhoogtepunt van $13,7 miljard te bereik—gedryf deur sterk vrugte-oeste en vee-herwinning. Sedert 2020 het die landbouhandelsbalans van $3 miljard tot ‘n indrukwekkende $6 miljard verdubbel, wat die sektor se deurslaggewende rol in die land se internasionale handelspogings verder versterk.

“Suid-Afrika het wêreldklas uitvoergedrewe boere. Oor die afgelope 20 jaar het vrugte en wyn die kommoditeitsuitvoermandjie oorheers. Dit het 33% van Suid-Afrika se totale landbou uitvoerwaarde in 2023 uitgemaak. Hierdie kommoditeite is ook arbeidsintensief, wat hul belangrikheid vir werksgeleenthede in die landbou onderstreep,” sê Anton Kruger, Uitvoerende Hoofkantoor van FPEF.

Met die Suid-Afrikaanse G20-presidentskap op die horison, sal besprekings by hierdie geleentheid fokus op die kritieke uitdagings en geleenthede vir verbeterde marktoegang vir Suid-Afrikaanse landbouprodukte en beleggings. “Ons erken die noodsaaklike rol wat landbou nie net in ons ekonomie speel nie, maar ook in die groter Suider-Afrika streek se voedselsekerheid,” sê Johann Kotze, AgriSA Hoof Uitvoerende Beampte. “Soos ons vorentoe beweeg, is die bevordering van volhoubaarheid en die verbetering van marktoegang fundamenteel vir ons langtermyn sukses en veerkragtigheid.”

Die geleentheid sal ‘n platform bied vir dialoog oor verskeie strategieë om tarief- en nie-tariefversperrings te oorkom en samewerking tussen bedryfspelers te verbeter. ’n Verslag sal vrygestel word oor die sleutelhandelsuitdagings en -geleenthede wat die Suid-Afrikaanse landbou in die gesig staar.

“Ons moet die G20-presidentskap benut om beleggingsvertroue in die landbou te bou en om sy belangrike rol in die voedselstelsel te handhaaf. Meer as 50% van Suid-Afrikaanse produkte word deur die Wes-Kaap uitgevoer, wat die provinsie se reputasie as ‘n streekspilpunt vir landbouhandel en beleggingsgeleenthede beklemtoon,” het Wrenelle Stander, WESGRO Hoof Uitvoerende Beampte bygevoeg.

Hierdie geleentheid sal die samewerkende werk wat uitgevoer word om ‘n verenigde visie vir Suid-Afrikaanse landbou en die impak daarvan op die G20-markte uit te lig. Saam kan ons ‘n pad vorentoe uitstippel wat groei, volhoubaarheid en veerkragtigheid omhels.
