Kwanalu: Preservation and Development of Agricultural Land Act (PDAL)
On 27/01/25 the President signed the PDAL bill into law. A win for members as the act ensures the preservation and sustainable development of agricultural land, securing food production for current and future generations.
The Act establishes a national regulatory framework to coordinate the responsible development and preservation of agricultural land. This includes measures to:
- Prevent fragmentation and loss of agricultural land
- Promote viable farming units
- Encourage optimal land use
- Support food security and economic growth
AgriSA, Kwanalu and its members have been actively engaged in shaping this legislation. We are pleased to report that nearly all of our inputs proposed were incorporated into the final Act, reflecting our ongoing commitment to the agricultural sector’s sustainability and prosperity. The Act provides significant protection for South African agriculture by strengthening land-use limitations and ensuring a stable, thriving agricultural sector. The Act’s effective future implementation relies heavily on the creation of further regulations and norms and standards.
AgriSA and its members will actively participate to ensure that the sound principles of the Act are fully operationalised in the interest of the sector.
We will continue to engage with government to support effective implementation and safeguard the interests of our members.
