Irrigation Boards conversion to Water User Associations

Please find a notice by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) inviting irrigation boards to prepare proposals for their transformation to water users’ associations in accordance with section 91 of the National Water Act, 1998.  Proposals need to be submitted by irrigation boards to the DWS offices as indicated before 27 July 2023. Irrigation boards that are not functional or operational do not have to submit proposals. They will be disestablished by the DWS.   We are informed by SAAFWUA that in the absence of proposals by irrigation boards, the DWS will in all likelihood constitute water users associations as it deems appropriate. It is recommended that affected irrigation boards be advised to consider approaching SAAFWUA for guidance in this regard.
