Kwanalu: COVID-19 Update: 31/03/20
This is for the use of Kwanalu Members only.
Dear Members
Please remember we are in a situation where it is “business unusual”.
Please ensure that if you are truly an essential service that you adhere to the regulations as stipulated. The agricultural sector cannot afford to be removed as an essential service or have stricter regulations imposed on it due to ill-discipline and abuse of the regulations.
We are attending to numerous issues and will continue to strive to ensure that our member’s interests are raised at the highest levels and are attended to during this critical lockdown period.

- Draft Transport Regulatory Framework (Subject To Change)
A framework on COVID-19 Lockdown: Implications for transport in Agriculture has been drawn up. This has taken relevant legislation into account.
A key matter which is still with the relevant authorities is a request that a directive is issued clarifying the “goods compartment” of for eg. a bakkie. The current recommendation and practice being applied is:
- That famers be allowed to transport farm workers on bakkies as follows; workers keeping at least a one meter distance apart, 4 people, each seated in one of the four corners of the bakkie’s goods compartment – whilst adhering to the current transport sanitary requirements
- That famers be allowed to transport farm workers on trucks as follows; workers keeping at least a one meter distance apart, number of people dependent on the size of the trucks goods compartment allowing for the minimum one meter apart distance, each person seated – whilst adhering to the current transport sanitary requirements
Note: this is not yet contained in the regulations and we are lobbying for absolute clarity.
